1. PURPOSE & DOCUMENT SCOPE
This technical specification (Doc ID: 2021796-001) defines the mandatory design, performance, functional, safety and compliance requirements for Siemens industrial automation systems, hardware components and integrated software solutions. All specifications contained within this document are binding for all Siemens engineering teams, project stakeholders, authorized suppliers and third-party partners. This document supersedes all prior versions and informal specifications for the referenced product families, with full compliance required for all new design, manufacturing, integration and validation activities.
2. APPLICABILITY & ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
2.1 Scope of Application
Applicable to all Siemens industrial control systems, human-machine interface (HMI) devices, programmable logic controllers (PLC), drive systems, safety relays and associated firmware/software modules. Valid for global deployments across industrial, commercial, manufacturing and process automation verticals.
2.2 Stakeholder Responsibilities
Siemens Engineering Division shall maintain compliance to all design specifications. Siemens Quality Assurance (QA) shall validate adherence to requirements during all product lifecycle stages. Authorized suppliers shall implement all mandatory specifications in component manufacturing. End-user implementation teams shall follow all installation and operational guidelines defined herein.
3. NORMATIVE REFERENCES & REGULATORY COMPLIANCE
All Siemens equipment and systems covered by Doc ID 2021796-001 shall comply with the latest published revisions of the following international standards, directives and internal specifications:
• IEC 61131 Industrial automation systems and integration
• IEC 61508 Functional safety of electrical/electronic/programmable electronic safety-related systems
• ISO 13849 Safety of machinery - Safety-related parts of control systems
• EN 60204 Machinery electrical equipment
• UL 508 Industrial control equipment
• Siemens Internal Engineering Standards (SES) - Full Compliance Suite
• RoHS 2 Directive (2011/65/EU) - Restriction of Hazardous Substances
• CE Marking - Compliance with EU Machinery & Low Voltage Directives
4. MANDATORY TECHNICAL & FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS
4.1 Hardware Performance Specifications
✓ All hardware components shall operate continuously at 0°C to 60°C ambient temperature, 5-95% non-condensing humidity
✓ Vibration resistance compliant with IEC 60068-2-6 (5-500Hz, 2g acceleration) for industrial deployments
✓ Electrical input tolerance: 85-264V AC, 50/60Hz with surge protection to IEC 61000-4-5
✓ MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) ≥ 100,000 hours at 25°C ambient operating conditions
✓ All physical interfaces shall be corrosion-resistant and rated for minimum 10,000 mating cycles
4.2 Software & Operational Requirements
✓ Firmware/software shall execute all control logic with deterministic response time ≤ 1ms for safety-critical functions
✓ All user-configurable parameters shall be stored in non-volatile memory with redundant backup capability
✓ Communication protocols (PROFINET, PROFIBUS, Modbus TCP/IP) shall maintain error-free data transmission at full load
✓ System shall support remote diagnostics, firmware updates and configuration management without operational downtime
4.3 Safety & Reliability Requirements
✓ All safety-related control functions shall meet SIL 3 / PL e safety integrity levels per IEC 61508 / ISO 13849
✓ Emergency stop circuits shall be hardwired with independent power supplies and fault detection capability
✓ System shall generate real-time fault alerts and event logs for all safety-related anomalies
✓ Fault-tolerant design shall prevent single-point failures from causing hazardous machine operation
✓ All safety interlocks shall be mechanically and electronically redundant for critical machine functions
4.4 Human-Machine Interface (HMI) Requirements
✓ HMI displays shall be sunlight-readable with minimum 1000 cd/m² brightness and wide viewing angles
✓ Physical input devices shall be ergonomically designed for gloved operation with tactile feedback
✓ Error messages shall be specific, actionable and include clear corrective procedures for operators
5. PRODUCT VALIDATION & ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA
All Siemens products and systems shall undergo formal validation testing prior to release and deployment, including environmental stress screening (ESS), functional performance testing, safety integrity verification and compliance auditing. All test results shall be documented and retained for regulatory compliance purposes. Acceptance criteria include 100% adherence to all mandatory specifications defined in this document, zero critical non-conformances and successful completion of all safety certification testing. Field validation shall include on-site performance verification and operator acceptance testing for integrated systems. All non-conformances shall be classified by severity and resolved with documented corrective action plans prior to product approval.
6. DOCUMENT REVISION & CHANGE CONTROL
All revisions, amendments or modifications to this technical specification (2021796-001) shall be formally requested, reviewed and approved by the Siemens Global Engineering Standards Committee and Quality Assurance Division. All change requests shall include technical justification, impact assessment and compliance verification. Approved revisions shall be assigned a new version number, dated and distributed to all relevant stakeholders. Historical document versions shall be retained for audit purposes and archived in accordance with Siemens document retention policies. No informal deviations from this specification are permitted without formal written approval.
